Origins:  Like the Mughals and the Portuguese, the British refashioned Indian Food according to their tastes and created an independent branch of Indian cookery. Curry powder is a mixture of spices created to please the pallets of British citizens who found themselves living in India. The name curry is derived from the Tamil word "kari" which means sauce and is not a staple ingredient in traditional Indian dishes.  

Culinary Uses:    Although curry powder is not a traditional Indian spice blend like garam masala, it still adds a unique flavor to a variety of dishes. Because the main ingredient is the colorful spice, turmeric, curry powder blend brings a warm, aromatic flavor and color to any dish. It can be used to enhance the flavor of deviled eggs, potato salad, and yogurt based marinades.
