Origins:   Garam Masala is a blend of ground spices used extensively in Indian Cuisine. The blend is believed to have originated in Northern India, where it is especially found in traditional Mughal dishes. Garam, meaning "hot", is a little misleading in regards to the flavor of the blend. It is more warm, than spicy with sweet, floral notes and has a slightly earthy aroma.

Culinary Uses:  Garam Masala is best when added at the end of cooking a dish and even sprinkled over a dish before serving. The blend differs in ingredients from region to region in India, getting hotter the further south you go. The spice blend is used predominantly in creamy, rich curries and thick lentil dishes like red kidney bean stews.
